To blog or not to blog, it’s the big question - especially for small business owners that just launched their product site. It’s a question that I get daily from my customers and the answers are never that obvious.
A blog is a great free way of expressing your views, opinion, educate your readers and interacting with them. Take a look at the pros, cons and what you should consider before starting a blog.
Showing off your expertise
It’s a great way to show off your knowledge. Whether it’s your product or a subject related to your industry. The breaker point here is - your content needs to be good (as in interesting).
Better search engine ranking
Yes! The more keywords your blog has, the more chances of it popping up first in search engines. Having an SEO friendly website means blogging. To become besties with SEO that means blogging a lot.
Building a community around your brand
It’s a great way of connecting with people who without your blog would have never heard of you. It builds trust, a connection and the communication will happen a lot easier afterwards.
You’ll inspire others
Of course you’ll inspire others! Don’t forget you’re a creator and you’re sharing a piece of your passion. So whether it’s to make soy candles or be the deal breaker on opening a blog, your opinion is the star in your posts.
Great way to track your journey
It’s a great way to track your entrepreneurial journey. People who are interested in your brand will also notice your natural evolution and that’s totally normal - be authentic! Talk about what’s currently important to you.
You or whoever is assigned to write will have to sit down and take a few hours per blog post, put some thought and energy into each one.
Need for inspiration
One of the hardest parts about starting a blog is to find inspiration on the subjects. Once you start and the ball is rolling, it will come naturally, you’ll see.
Successful bloggers have one thing in common - they are consistent. Be prepared when you launch, make sure you have content to post in the following weeks. My best tip for consistency in blogging as an entrepreneur is to assign yourself a specific time that will stay the same every week.
Before starting a blog
A few other elements that you should take in consideration.
Now as a business owner who are your clients? Are they your main target? If the answer to both these questions is ''yes'' - you should know what they like. If you haven’t managed to hit your target audience yet or you’re just starting up - reflect on how you could position yourself with your blog (edgy, funny, sarcastic, conservative, informative, etc.).
Their interests / Your interests
Simple one. Are their interests necessarily yours too?
Make sure you study your target audience and learn what they are interested in (making the connection between your product and other concepts).
Who will be writing the blogs - Is it you or will you hire someone to do it for you?
Important to have in mind, because as an entrepreneur you’ll find yourself very busy with your day-to-day business growth needs and blogging might get forgotten in the corner.
Answering comments, requests to co-blog, brand requests, etc.
Now you have all the necessary information to help you with your decision to start a blog or not.
