Hey there! It’s your favorite Montreal Social Media Agency talking!
We decided to write this little blog post in order to help you bring engagement on your favorite social platform, Instagram!
As it has become a crucial part of owning a business, your feed & your engagement towards your followers will help you gain visibility & bring new customers to your business. Also putting a lot of effort into building a trending feed is not always easy, we understand that not everyone has the time to strategically think about their platform, which is why we will be sharing our 11 Tips & Tricks to Increase Engagement On Instagram! Let’s get to it, shall we?
Tip #1: Provide value to your followers
This isn’t necessarily a “trick”, but followers don’t necessarily want to see a poorly lit selfie. Think of the followers you have & the ones you follow. Why do you go back on their profile & like their posts? Because they have interesting content, they travel, explore life & try out new & exciting things.
Not everyone has the time to provide great content or value, change that! Find something interesting to do in your own city. Educate, inspire, create content that many have not seen before in order to grow your feed, be authentic!
Many people use the platform to promote their city & make their travel destinations Insta worthy, so make your city look good for your followers & others to want to visit!
Now that’s how you can provide value to your followers - make your account a reference in your expertise.
Tip #2: Add Geotag To Your Photos
Talk about travelling! Whenever you post a new & exciting photo of a wall you just discovered make sure to add the location for other people to check it out too! Nearly the entire planet has been photographed, so don’t think you’re being secretive by hiding a place, share everything! The visibility you’ll get from sharing a photo and geotagging it will bring you so much more exposure than keeping it a secret.
Nevertheless, do NOT geotag your specific home location! Reports of burglaries & harassment have surfaced towards people who have done so. So geotag a general city.
Tip #3: Use Of Hashtag For Location Or Brand
Hashtags have become the main source to attract traffic to your account. Finding the perfect hashtag is a struggle and we totally get it. But they are necessary in order to boost visibility and gain followers! Hashtaging your location will attract more activity and followers to your feed as they have the same interest in the location. For example, posting a photo in Montreal of a coffee shop you could use the hashtags:
#mtlcafelove #mtlcafecrawl #mtlcoffee #mtlcafe
And if you know a brand that has their own hashtag, make sure to include it. For example, if you post a photo of your outfit or a handbag - use the hashtags linked with the brand (if they have some), that way you encourage others to you use them & you can broaden the exposure to your account.
#mattandnat #lululemon #lole #rudsak
PS: In order to get more engagement on your photo use the hashtags immediately in the first comment section of your post. By doing that, you’ll attract more people who are interested in similar brands than you.
Tip #4: Write An Interesting & Elaborate Caption
You might’ve noticed that Instagram is filled with “visual story tellers” & bloggers who build their brands strictly off their Instagram page to bring more traffic to their blog. Writing a long caption is key in connecting with your followers & adds a lot of value to your feed. Instead of only posting a pretty picture with no caption, add a long caption & tell a story, that way your loyal community and new followers will understand the intent behind the post.
Of course this all depends on your industry so don’t be afraid to get creative! From sharing mini recipes, tutorials or wanting to start an important discussion!
Tip #5: Use Line To Break Your Text
If you plan on writing a very long paragraph, remember to break it so your followers aren’t scared off by a huge block of text they have to read.
While writing your caption, use the “return” button on your phone so you can create a space between your paragraphs. Click on any symbol of your choice to break the text & by doing so you’ll be able to break down different paragraphs.
PS: The use of emoji’s to break text doesn’t work!
Tip #6: Include A Brand In Your Caption And Photo
By tagging brands or influencers in your photo it boosts engagement. As you deliver quality content to your audience, by tagging others it will boost visibility & odds are the brand/person you tagged will want to repost, comment & tag you in their feed!
Here’s how to tag someone in your caption. Use the @ symbol followed by the person/brand’s Instagram. If you want to tag someone in your photo simply click the ‘Tag People’ option while writing your post.
Tip #7: CALL TO ACTION
By starting a conversation & asking a question this will boost engagement on your feed & keep your audience engaged. People like to feel integrated in a group/discussion. Keep in mind that by using easy questions you’ll get an increase in responses. This method is known as a Call To Action.
Don’t be afraid to get out of your comfort zone & ask questions. By asking questions & integrating your community on your post, people will see that you care about your followers and want to engage more. Do this for every caption and your followers will start engaging more.
Tip #8: Comments Are The New Likes
As Instagram constantly changes its algorithm comments have now become more popular than likes. Comment on other peoples photos and hopefully they’ll return the love! If you keep doing that, your pictures will increase in comments and by doing that you’ll have more chances of being found in the explore tab of the platform.
Tip #9: Replying To Comments
People seem to forget that Instagram is a SOCIAL platform, so you must stay engaged to your community and socialize. By ignoring comments you give the impression that you don’t care about your followers and don’t appreciate their following.
As you stay connected to your community you’ll gain followers, in the long run it might be hard to reply to each comment but be alert of the ones who leave small comments like “super” or “nice”. You might think it is not worth your time, but it is! As some of these comments are left by bots, it is important to reply to them as the person who’s comment your replying to will have a notification, therefore look at your profile.
Tip #10: Brand Tagging In Your Story
You can now tag brands on your Instagram Story, and it is a major plus! Brands get a notification in their direct messages and the odds that they will open it are that much bigger. This can also increase engagement on your Instagram account and will give you an advantage, if brands like what your feed or story they might even mention you in their story!
Tip #11: Sharing Is Caring
Posting a photo to Instagram doesn’t mean you’re done for the day. Built into the app is the option to share on Facebook & Twitter. DO IT! People on other platforms will see your picture and decide to come check out your feed or recent post.
